New pavilion at CHS: On Aug. 18, Catholic High School in Virginia Beach broke ground on a new 2,300-square-foot athletic pavilion. The TowneBank Athletic Pavilion, a single-level structure accessible from all athletic fields, will contain public restrooms, a girls’ locker room, a concessions area, an officials’ suite, a multipurpose room for team meetings and a brick plaza with outdoor seating. The $2 million project is expected to be completed by spring 2024. After ground was broken on the site, it was blessed by CHS Chaplain Father Anthony Mpungu and Father Robert Cole, pastor of St. John the Apostle, Virginia Beach. Gleaning corn: On Aug. 11, a group of parishioners from Immaculate Conception, Hampton, spent the morning in Northampton County on the Eastern Shore of Virginia gleaning corn from harvested fields. Gleaning is the practice of collecting food that is left behind by harvesting machinery. Parishioners collected approximately 3,200 pounds of corn. Some of the corn went to the Society of St. Andrew, which will distribute it to those in need on the Eastern Shore. The rest was brought back to Hampton to distribute through the parish’s food ministry.
