After seven years as a social studies teacher at Roanoke Catholic School, Megan Potter was appointed Head of School, effective May 6.

“I already had my administrative license [from Longwood University], and I had toyed with the idea of going into administration, but I didn’t want to leave Roanoke Catholic,” said Potter, who called her time at the school “the highlight of my more than 20-year career.”

The position became available this past winter, and she decided to apply. After the COVID-19 pandemic, said Potter, there is still a lot of rebuilding to do at the school.

“We are working to build back our elective options. We have hired a new music teacher, and we’re looking to bring back band and string options we lost during COVID,” she said. “We’re strengthening our steel drum program, our campus ministry program, our AP offerings, and our sports programs.”

Though she described herself as “someone with tons of ideas,” she wants to pace herself, finding the right balance of growth and familiarity. Potter emphasized that God is in control of her journey, and of the school’s journey as well.

“When we allow the Holy Spirit to drive everything, everything is possible,” she said.

She cited a verse from the Gospels that strengthens her resolve: Matthew 5:14, in which Jesus says, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.”

“We refer to Roanoke Catholic as the school ‘on the hill,’” said Potter. “I’m so excited to help Roanoke Catholic shine like a beacon. The future is so bright here ‘on the hill’ with God as our guide.”
