Nina Edgerton Leaming, wife of Deacon Frank Leaming, passed away peacefully in her sleep June 1 in her Caroline County home after a battle with cancer. She was 81.
Nina was born Sept. 3, 1942, in Kenly, North Carolina, to Glenn and Thelma Edgerton.
She began working with the Commonwealth Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Program in 1984, serving unaccompanied minors. Over the next 25 years, she and her husband welcomed more than 30 foster children into their home.
Nina worked as a paralegal until her retirement in 2004, at which time she became the office manager at St. Mary of the Annunciation, Ladysmith, where her husband serves as a deacon. She was the office manager until 2010.
She was preceded in death by her parents Glenn and Thelma; brothers Robert, Glenn and Bill; and her daughter Linda Elizabeth Earley.
She is survived by her husband Frank; son Erik Earley (Bonnie Settle-Brown); daughter Dawn Leaming (Erik Pruett); granddaughter Remy Leaming; sister Linda Pittman; brother Michael Edgerton; many foster children; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Her funeral was held Saturday, June 8, at St. Mary of the Annunciation.
