Marian Gatley Mahon passed away April 24 at the age of 93. A funeral Mass was celebrated May 10 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Richmond.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 48 years, Charles Edward Mahon, who served as editor of The Catholic Virginian for 38 years.
Mrs. Mahon was a proud graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University (formerly Richmond Professional Institute) and Granby High School in Norfolk.
She served as the public relations director of the Richmond and Roanoke chapters of the American Red Cross for 28 years. After she retired in 1984, she worked for 12 years with the Bishop’s Appeal at the Catholic Diocese of Richmond.
Mrs. Mahon is also preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Charles and Ida Mary (Graeve) Gatley; and three siblings: Claire Gatley Palasthy, Doris Marie Gatley, and James Paul Gatley.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Flora-Jane (McKenzie) Gatley; three nieces: Anne (Palasthy) Hagan (Hugh), Susan (Palasthy) Amonette (Gregg), and Sarah-Jane (Gatley) Ziaya (David); eight nieces and nephews: Tom, Tye, Piper, Jake, Margaret, Elizabeth, Andrew, and Sabrina; two great-nieces; her beloved Grinsell family: Matthew, Rebecca, Isabella, John, Eamon, and Maeve; dear friend Bill Powell; and dedicated caretakers Dot Cary and Louise Robinson.
