Bishop Barry C. Knestout has appointed Lily Nguyen Dunkle the director of the diocesan Office of Communications and editor-in-chief of The Catholic Virginian, effective June 16.
“Instruments of communication are crucial for fostering and strengthening our communion with one another and spreading the faith,” said Bishop Knestout in announcing the appointment.
“The director of communications in the Diocese of Richmond is a key advisor and assistant to me in fulfilling my responsibilities of teaching, proclamation and evangelization in the world,” he continued.

Nguyen Dunkle has served as editor of the diocesan newspaper since January 2023 – the first woman and Vietnamese-American to guide the publication in its 100-year history. In July 2024, she began serving as the interim communications director while continuing her role as editor.
“I am extremely humbled that Bishop Knestout has entrusted me with this great responsibility,” said Nguyen Dunkle. “It brings me such joy to carry out his vision for sharing our faith with others.”
A wife and mother of eight, Nguyen Dunkle blends a simple, sincere approach with more than 20 years of combined broadcast and print journalism experience for her new dual role. Her responsibilities include overseeing all diocesan communications efforts, including media relations and print/digital platforms.
After working many years in secular journalism, Nguyen Dunkle said it is uplifting to focus her work on reflecting the values of the Church. She takes seriously the mission of the Office of Communications, which is to inform, instruct, and inspire people in the Catholic community and beyond.
That part of the job comes naturally, she said. “Our diocese is a Christ-filled community with many beautiful stories to tell.”
