St. Patrick’s Jubilee pilgrimage (above): Pilgrims from St. Patrick, Lexington, led by pastor Father J. Maxwell Appiagyei, made a Jubilee Year pilgrimage to the Basilica of St. Andrew, Roanoke, on their patronal feast day, March 17. St. Andrew was established as a mission parish of St. Patrick in 1883 by St. Patrick’s pastor, Father John W. Lynch. The pilgrimage included a visit to Father Lynch’s grave in the basilica’s crypt.

Fighting fundraiser (left): At the 15th annual Boxing Smoker March 8, Benedictine College Preparatory raised over $200,000 for the Coach Joe Arnold Scholarship. More than 600 people watched seven professional boxing matches and one amateur fight in the McMurtrie-Reynolds Pavilion. The scholarship money will be awarded to students who excel academically and play at least two sports. Coach Arnold, who took in the action ringside at the fundraiser, coached track-and-field and football, and taught English at Benedictine for 43 years before retiring last year.

 

Ultra successful fundraiser (below): Through the Knights of Columbus Ultrasound Initiative, the Msgr. Edward Mickle Council #14263 in Cape Charles purchased new ultrasound equipment for the Accomack-Northampton Pregnancy Center in Onley. The council raised $13,450, which was matched by the Supreme Council for a total of $26,900. The parishioners of St. Charles Borromeo, Cape Charles, helped raise the amount in about six weeks. Treasurer Dennis Corbitt and Grand Knight Bob James were able to view an image produced by the new equipment on March 12.

Mason’s Stations (below): Father Oscar Paraiso, pastor of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, West Point, blessed the Stations of the Cross Prayer Path, built by Eagle Scout Mason Kopacki. The blessing took place March 14, when parishioners gathered to pray the Stations of the Cross. Mason is with Troop 360 of King and Queen County.

Taking good care (below): On Saturday, March 15, the Care for Creation Ministry at Sacred Heart, Norfolk, met for a clean-up event to remind parishioners to recycle, reuse, and compost. About 15 years ago, Sacred Heart adopted a portion of a busy roadway, cleaning it regularly in support of Keep Norfolk Beautiful. This time, the team of seven collected 30 pounds of trash and 15 pounds of recycling.
