Dec. 14 was Wreaths Across America Day, an annual event nationwide in which wreaths are placed on the graves of veterans. More than 4,200 cemeteries across the United States participated this year, including All Saints Catholic Cemetery in Portsmouth, where the local effort was led by St. Paul’s Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree Assembly #1166.

Assembly #1166 was assisted by members of the Color and Honor Guard from Knights of Columbus Assembly #1505, based in Virginia Beach, and by many veterans and volunteers, in an effort to lay 200 wreaths on veterans’ graves.

Students from Portsmouth Catholic Regional School (PCRS) were among the volunteers. PCRS is a Purple Star School, a designation awarded by the Virginia Department of Education to schools that have demonstrated a major commitment to students and families connected to the U.S. military.

“As a Purple Star School, remembering and honoring our military are essential,” said PCRS principal Donna Henry.
