Saintly celebration (Above, right): The true spirit of Hallowtide was on display at Immaculate Conception, Hampton, as approximately 140 parishioners of all ages dressed as their favorite saints for the Generation in Faith Together event at the parish Sunday, Oct. 20. Garden of Mercy (below): Middle school students at St. John the Apostle School, Virginia Beach, are learning about science and the Corporal Works of Mercy through a school garden. Sixth graders in Mrs. Caitlyn Hayes’ science class began building the garden on Sept. 22. Eighth graders continued the work a few days later. Students planted herbs, flowers, and vegetables, including beets, carrots, and broccoli. The garden is backed by agricultural grant money, with a goal of enhancing hands-on learning, fostering environmental stewardship, connecting with the community, and providing real-world problem-solving experience.
Stew and Brew (below): The St. Bridget Knights of Columbus #5476 in Richmond held their annual Stew and Brew on Oct. 18. “Stew Master” Tom Giannasi led the team in creating two big batches of stew for the fundraiser. Patrons dined on Brunswick stew, hamburgers, hot dogs, hush puppies and macaroni and cheese. Families enjoyed the live band, the “Hullabaloos,” and there was face painting and balloon animals for the kids. Proceeds benefited the 75th anniversary celebration of St. Bridget, Richmond, and the many worthy programs the Knights support.
School’s grand prize (below): Portsmouth Catholic Regional School won first place in the Vote for a School Contest, hosted by Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers’ Cares Program! Principal Donna Henry said they used social media, emails, newsletters, and good old-fashioned word of mouth to get the highest number of votes. The school was awarded the $10,000 grand prize Oct. 17 after it was announced on a local TV broadcast. Students and faculty celebrated with a pep rally, where they accepted their prize from Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers.
