This action-adventure role playing game, which bundles remastered versions of three previous titles in the franchise, is a masterpiece of narrative design. Yet seamy elements make it not only strictly grown-up fare but an option even mature players in search of casual entertainment may wish to avoid. Gamers control a famous 23rd-century soldier (female voice of Jennifer Hale, male voice of Mark Meer) on the hunt for a fellow warrior (voice of Fred Tatasciore) who’s gone rogue. Good choices open up possibilities and motivate others to aid the protagonist while bad behavior leads to opposite results. Gameplay also promotes unity, loyal friendship and self-sacrifice. But a vivid depiction of gory mayhem and the degree to which the designers buy into misguided contemporary sexual ethics suggest caution. Playable on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows. Combat violence with bloody effects, a benign view of homosexual acts, implied nonmarital sexual activity, scenes of sensuality involving rear and partial nudity, drug references, considerable rough and crude language. The Catholic News Service classification is L — limited adult audience, material whose problematic content many adults would find troubling. The Entertainment Software Rating Board rating is M — mature.
